Hidden Inequalities

Absent Marathoners

I used AI-assisted modeling to create an interactive marathon that reveals subtle inequalities in sign-ups and lotteries. As a female guide-runner, I researched barriers facing visually impaired runners participating with guides, women navigating menstruation, older runners excluded regardless of fitness or experience, and wheelchair racers with few opportunities in some countries. Viewers run along a track divided into four sections to explore floating images of these groups. The images remain 60% transparent until clicked, reminding us that many are absent while we are racing, and that their absence calls for structural change.

Book of Unrecognized Knowledge

170cm × 140cm × 10 cm

Service is commonly understood, however well-intentioned, as helping disabled people achieve what nondisabled people can. In this handmade, human-sized book, I document and draw knowledge my visually impaired friends have shared, including everyday tips, practical skills, and life lessons that sighted people rarely understand. Standing at human height, it presents them as equal contributors to knowledge rather than mere recipients. Colorful braille dots reflect the diversity of their lives, while braille as the main text and English as its translation reverse the usual direction of knowledge exchange. This piece exposes the limits of sighted perspectives and the epistemic injustice of assuming our knowledge is superior.
